Whenever I see a good supply of dried pine cones lying on the ground, I try to snag as many as I can.

By the that I have gotten home with my stash I have thought of at least a dozen things that I can do with them.
I like to place them in a large bowl as a decoration before I actually get my plans into motion.

This time of year there seems to be a lot pine cones around us.
Pine cones make a cheap and easy craft item.

Did you know,

  • The common pine cone that we know is actually the female cone and actually produces seeds.
  • There is also a male pine cone that can grow on the same tree as the female cone.
  • The pine cones that are green and are soft and sticky and without the ‘flaps’ are female and will evolve into the woody-flapped cones that we know.
  • Pine cones that we pick up off of the ground are usually the female ones that are finished with reproduction.
  • The Coulter Pinecone is the largest an can weigh up to 10 pounds!
  • Certain parts of the pine cone can be eaten or used in tea.
  • There are around 20 types of pine nuts that are edible by people.
